Cole Swindell took a moment to reflect on a tragic day in Nashville as he took the stage at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on Monday evening (March 27). Swindell offered “my prayers and lots of love back to our community in Nashville, Tennessee, that’s hurting beyond belief right now.”

Seven people died in a shooting at a private Christian school on Monday morning. The victims included three children, three staff members and the gunman. The school is for children in preschool through 6th grade. The children who died on Monday were all 9 years old, Metro Nashville Police Department officials confirmed. Staff members included the headmaster, a custodian and a substitute teacher. Officials confirmed that the suspect, a 28-year-old woman, was a former student at the school.

Swindell took the stage when he won the Country Song of the Year award at the 2023 iHeartRadio Music Awards, earning the recognition for his 90s-inspired single, “She Had Me At Heads Carolina.” Before he thanked collaborators on the song and others (including 90s country icon who inspired Swindell’s hit, Jo Dee Messina), Swindell shared his heartfelt statement in response to the tragedy at the school.

Lenny Kravitz, who hosted the awards show, also took a moment to address the tragic event on Monday. He and Swindell are two of many to express their heartache. Other country artists — including Chris Janson, Jessie James Decker, Jana Kramer, Carly Pearce, Ryan Hurd and many more — took to social media to offer support, prayers and calls for change. Kravitz said, in part: “Our hearts are heavy, and we are with you. Nashville, we love you, and America, we must do better.”
