The video, directed by Jennifer Massaux, finds Urban singing and playing the guitar in a dark, underground area. About half way through the clip, light starts to break through, ultimately leading Urban into the bright outdoors.
According to a press release, the beginning of "God Whispered Your Name" was filmed in "the darkest, dank and smelly place" underneath a warehouse in Nashville. The part when Urban emerges out into sunny skies and desert mountains is set in Lancaster, California.
"Playing guitar atop a boulder is definitely not a great idea. You just kinda lose yourself in what you’re doing, and every minute or two you realize what you’re doing, and you think, ‘I better not fall off this big a-- boulder," Urban said in a recent interview. "For me, a good music video takes the song to another level. It maybe gives the song a bit more dimension and hopefully we’ve done that with this one."
"God Whispered Your Name," originally released on February 27, is the first glimpse Urban's shared at his upcoming new album which he's previously said is "coming out very soon."
The same day he released the song, Urban also announced his plans to host the 2020 ACM Awards. The show was originally set for April 5, but has now been postponed to September 16 due to coronavirus concerns. In place of the original slot, this Sunday (April 5) CBS will air ACM Presents: Our Country.
The two-hour special will feature artists appearing from their homes "to share heartfelt thoughts and perform acoustic versions of country hits." Footage of favorite ACM moments from the past will also be shown. Additionally, the show will honor 10-time ACM Award winner Kenny Rogers, who died on March 20 at the age of 81.
